The Pack is providing hamburgers\, hotdogs\, buns\, paper products\, lemonade and water. All scout families should bring a side dish or dessert to share.

Do you want your Scout to go through this year without having to pay a pen ny out of your pocket?  Then this is a must-attend event.

For the 20 14-2015 Cub Scout year we are holding a special event to kick off our popco rn sales.  We are making significant changes to how we do popcorn sales and it is vital that you and your scout join us.  There is no fe e to attend the kickoff. Please send your scout and at least one guardian.  Siblings are welcome.

Help reduce our impact on our local park\, give back to our community and have a good time doing it with fellow scout s and adults!

This work day at Mountain Park Park is for all Pack 564 scouts and scouters (parents welcome too\, of course!) who want to be of s ervice to the community while completing a key requirement for the Outdoor Ethics Action Award (http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/OutdoorProgram/Out doorEthics/Awards/CubScout.aspx).

We'\;ll work under the directio n of park staff to pick up litter\, clear brush\, put down mulch or anythin g else they need to help make our own local county park shine.

This i s a rain-or-shine event. Please come dressed appropriately. Bring gloves fo r both you and your scouts. All tools will be provided\, and a signed volun teer release will be required by the county.

Arrow of Light (Webelos 2) scouts\, please join Boy Scouts from Troo p 549 to learn more about what troop camping is like\, get to know some of the leadership and work on Arrow of Light requirements. Please use the regi stration form below to sign up.

Registration is limited to 18 scouts.  The cost is $10 plus food.

After an initial meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 3 to meet other participants and turn in paperwork\, you’ll meet at th e Scout Hut at MPUMC at 8 a.m. on Saturday\, Aug. 8\, take care of some bas ic instruction then head out to the scout camp at Stone Mountain Park. You’ ll return to the Scout Hut around 1 p.m. Sunday.

A parent is strongly encouraged to attend.

Please review the Camp Packing list for what you need to bring\, and also make sure to print out a new copy of the BSA Medical Form\, fill out parts A & B for each participant and bring it with you to the Aug. 3 meeting. Join the Pack 564 hikers for our third mon thly hike on the Laurel Ridge Trail at Buford Dam. We’ll meet at the lower overlook parking area near the dam. The hike will depart at 9:30 a.m. sharp (not the previously advertised 10 a.m.). We will hike rain or shine.

The trail is about 4 miles. It’s mostly flat\, though there are a few mode rate climbs that will get your heart rate going. We expect the hike to take about 2.5 hours. There are some scenic overlooks of the lake and the dam. We’ll make a few stops along the way\, including a bathroom break and a sto p for a snack.

Remember to pack a snack and bring plenty of water. Pl ease check the hiking page for the regular kit you should bring on the hike.

We should also have patches for all our scout hikers\, so come on ou t!

Yes\, there is training for Cub Scout leaders! You are required to do two things toward s "Basic Training." First is Youth Protection\, which you have to do to app ly. Second is "Position Specific" training\, which tells you how to do your job. You can do this two ways: on-line\, or in a class taught by an experi enced leader. Doing both is even better!

But what is this class?

Investing just three hours on a Saturday morning will make scouting a g reat experience for your son-and his friends!

Our September hiking club is the beautiful\, cl ose and level Songbird and Woodland Trail complex at Stone Mountain Park.

Coming in at around 2 miles\, this is a fun and easy introduction to h iking for those new to the pack. Be sure to bring binoculars\, if you have them\, for bird spotting!

We will depart at 10 a.m. from the Songbird Trail entrance on the backside of the mountain off Stonewall Jackson Drive .

No registration is necessary\, just be at the meeting point on time . Bring plenty of water\, and be sure to check the hiking page for other th ings to bring.

For those of you who are new to the pack and t he hiking club\, we ask that both scouts and adults come equipped with essential items to ensure preparedness when in the outdoors\, includin g a rain gear\, water\, trail food\, a first aid kit\, a light source and a whistle. We also recommend sun protection (sunscreen or protective clothin g) and bug repellant.

While you likely won't need anything other than the water\, the bug repellant and the sunscreen\, the idea is to encourage the scouts (and family members) to make simple preparations for spending t ime in the outdoors. Accidents can and do happen more easily than is often thought\, and cell phone reception is not always available on hiking trails (including\, surprisingly\, the Songbird Trail!). While it seems odd to br ing on a bright\, fall morning\, rain protection\, a light source and a sig naling device like a whistle can often mean the difference between a quick\ , comfortable rescue and an overnight ordeal or worse.

Proper footwea r and whistles are required. Scouts who lack these items will NOT be allowe d to hike for their own safety.

All leaders eager to have a great Pack outdoor s program. At least one leader in each Pack should have BALOO training. BAL OO is specifically designed for a Cub Scout leader who has minimal camping experience but wants to plan and carry out a Pack overnighter. The goal of this Pack outdoor experience is to facilitate a successful outing that is f un while being based on the principles of Cub Scouting. A BALOO trained lea der is required for all Pack-organized overnighters (see Guide to Safe Scou ting).

We'll again be working with Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation on a service day at a local park. Unlike last year's project ... moving he avy mulch ... we'll be doing something more friendly to small muscles -- he lping clean up the walking trail and other locations in DeShong Park in Sto ne Mountain.

In addition to providing service to our community\, this project will help scouts earn their Outdoor Ethics Activity Award and can also count towards the Tiger "Earning Your Stripes" or "Good Knight" electi ves and possibly the Wolf "Council Fire" adventure.

I'm new to m y leader position\, is there in-person training for me?

Yes\, there is training for Cub Scout leaders! You are required to do two things toward s "Basic Training." First is Youth Protection\, which you have to do to app ly. Second is "Position Specific" training\, which tells you how to do your job. You can do this two ways: on-line\, or in a class taught by an experi enced leader. Doing both is even better!

But what is this class?

Investing just three hours on a Saturday morning will make scouting a g reat experience for your son-and his friends!

  • Helping scouts earn awards and rank
  • Managing paperwork & finances< /li>

    We'll even answer questions!

Do I have to?

We aren't throwing you out if you don't\, but it will make things easier for you and better for the kids in your Den or Pack. When leaders are trained they are less likely to quit \, and so are the Scouts\, because they will all have a better Scouting exp erience.

How do I register? Is there a fee?

At this point the re is no mechanism for on-line registration. For the time being\, just e-ma il the Sweetwater District Training Coordinators to say you're coming by th e Thursday before\, so we'll have materials for you. That's Lorrie or Miche lle\, below. Class materials are guaranteed only for registered participant s
(that means walk-ins take their chances). There's no fee for this tr aining.

Scouts will work on advancements geared toward our BSA NOVA Award Program. The hope is that the requirements and activities for earning these awards stimulates interest in STEM-related fields and shows how science\, technolo gy\, engineering and mathematics apply to everyday living and the world aro und them.

All leaders eager to have a great Pack outdoor s program. At least one leader in each Pack should have BALOO training. BAL OO is specifically designed for a Cub Scout leader who has minimal camping experience but wants to plan and carry out a Pack overnighter. The goal of this Pack outdoor experience is to facilitate a successful outing that is f un while being based on the principles of Cub Scouting. A BALOO trained lea der is required for all Pack-organized overnighters (see Guide to Safe Scou ting).

Join us on Saturday\, Feb. 6\, a s we get back to hiking with a 3-mile in-and-out hike at Harbins Park in Da cula.

We'll walk about 6/10ths of a mile on a paved multi-use trail t o the trailhead\, and from there hike a mile or so of the unpaved 4.5-mile loop trail through the woods before turning back and heading for home.

< p>The trail is fairly easy\, but my phone did record about 420 feet of tota l elevation gain\, so it's not totally flat.

Keep in mind it will pro bably be chilly\, so dress appropriately. We'll cancel the hike in case of dangerous cold/wind chills or anything more than a little drizzle.

2016-01-13 001Remember that scouts are expected to bring basic supplies you should alway s take with you on any hike (water\, trail food\, a basic first aid kit\, s un/rain/insect protection (as necessary seasonally)\, a light source and\, most importantly\, a whistle).

Scouts will be unlikely to use any of these items on the hike\, with the exception of the water and snack\, but t he idea is to get them thinking about being prepared to deal with outdoor e mergencies (which can strike anywhere\, not just in the deep wilderness).

We will meet at 11 a.m. at the map kiosk near the parking area. Be on time\, as we will step off on time! You should be back at your cars by 12:3 0 or so.

This event combines our March hiking club hike with a pack service project to help clean up along the Vickery Creek T rail\, part of the Chattahoochee National Recreation Area near Roswell. Ple ase fill out the form below if you plan on participating.

We'll pick up trash while hiking along the trail and visit the historic ruins of the R oswell Mill. Afterwards\, we may enjoy a picnic lunch. If so\, please bring a bag lunch!

Scouts who have attended Outdoor Ethics training and me t other requirements for the Outdoor Ethics Awareness Award will earn that recognition by participating in this event.

Please make sure to bring plenty of water and dress appropriately: no open-toed shoes.

Please be at the trailhead no later than 10 a.m. You can expect to be back at your car by noon or so.

For our May hike\, we'll venture out to Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park in Cobb County for a wa lk on the Environmental Trail (we may tackle the mountaintop trail in the f all).

This is just a 1.35 mile hike\, but your scout will earn two mi les on his passport for this excursion. You can also stick around and enjoy on your own some of the great historical features at this park\, which int erprets the the Civil War battle of Kennesaw Mountain\, or visit the nearby  Southern Museum o f Civil War & Locomotive History.

Meet at 10 a.m. at the Environm ental Trail trailhead\, which is located across the parking lot from the Vi sitor's Center. It should take about 45 minutes to get there\, assuming cle ar traffic.

Be advised: this is a very popular park and the parking l ot can fill up quickly. You may be directed to park in an overflow lot some distance away and walk back to the visitor center. Please leave enough tim e to ensure you'll be at the trailhead on time even if you have to park at this remote location.

The trail is largely flat\, but does have a fai r number of roots and rocks\, so caution is advised.

Join us for a beau tiful hike along Sweetwater Creek past the ruins of the Civil-War era New M anchester Mill. This is a bit of a jaunt ... about 45 minutes of driving\, but I think it's worth it. It's a really pretty trail.

We'll hike thi s as an out-and-back trail (it connects to another trail through a pleasant forest environment\, but getting there is pretty tough going. Our walk wil l be about 2.4 miles in all (3 miles on your scout's passport). Most of the trail is wide\, flat and very easy to walk\, although there are some stair s and the second half of the hike involves some rock scrambling that could be tricky for some. We will stop along a wide spot along the riverbank for a good snack or light lunch\, walk a bit further to explore the shoals\, th en turn back before the trail goes fully rocky in the last two-tenths of a mile or so.

20160616_115821On the w ay back\, we'll the hike at a shallow and safe backwater that's a great pla ce for the kids to get their feet wet\, so bring water shoes if you'd like for them to do so. This way\, those who don't want to stop at this location can head on back to the visitor center and their cars without others feeli ng time-pressured to leave.

This trail is not stroller accessible\, a nd I don't recommend the last portion for very small children or anyone wit h mobility issues.

Please remember to have your scouts bring a small pack with the six essentials for going outdoors: Sun/insect protection\, wa ter\, trail food\, a simple first aid kit\, a flashlight and\, most importa ntly\, a whistle to signal with if they get lost. As always\, they won't us e much of this ... it's about encouraging them to be prepared to safely ven ture into the outdoors.

To get there\, take I-20 past Six Flags. Get off at Exit 41\, Lee. Road and turn left over the highway. Drive for a mile or so and then turn left on Cedar Terrace (it's a small\, easily missed ro ad\, so be on the lookout). Turn right on Mt. Vernon Road\, and then left o n Factory Shoals Road and follow to the visitor center parking lot. Parking is $5.

Meet near the flag pole at the visitor center for a prompt 10 a.m. step-off. Scouts should wear their Class B shirts.

Plan on abou t two hours\, but you could spend more time here if you wanted to.

One note: Do not be alarmed if you hear gunfire on arriving at the pa rk. There's an outdoor police firing range nearby.

Aft er a few hikes that took us to the other side of the metro area\, we'll sta y close to home this time with a hike around the lake at Stone Mountain Par k. This approximately 2.5-mile hike (3 miles on your scout's passport) star ts from the playground on the south side of the park\, traces part of the C herokee Trail\, crosses the lake and then turns back along a connecting tra il that will take us back to Robert E. Lee Blvd. and the playground parking lot. Along the way are great views of the lake and Stone Mountain\, the ch imney of an old homestead and a few chances to look out for fish and other critters in the water.

The trail is relatively easy\, with a total elevation gain of about 200 feet\, but it is narrow in spots\, has a considerable amount of roots and some rocks to trip up the unobservant h iker. Trailside poison ivy is abundant and I'm fairly certain there's some poison sumac\, too\, but you should be able to avoid it all fairly easily b y staying on the trail and watching where you're walking. The trail is a bi t buggy\, so I strongly recommend insect repellent.

The hike should l ast about an hour\, but you might want to factor in some time for your kids to play on the playground. They've rebuilt it and it looks like a lot of f un.

You will want to park in the lot next to the playground\, as indi cated on the map. If that lot is full\, there is another lot just down the road. You can park there. We'll hike right past it on the way back.

We're luck y to have a Cub Scout Fun Day in our own backyard this year at Mountain Par k United Methodist Church! This event is hosted by the Sweetwater District and open to all Cub Scouts in our area. Cub Scout Fun Day will include food \, games\, scavenger hunt\, prizes and more.

Stone Mountain Songbird Trail

For our first hike with our new scouts and t heir families\, we'll head down to Stone Mountain Park and walk the easy 1- mile Songbird Trail\, located at the site of the site of the 1996 Olympic V elodrome and Archery course.

The area is now a quiet wildlife sanctua ry perfect for birding and\, of course\, hiking.

Because of the natur e of the trail\, we may split up into flights and stagger our departures to limit noise and impact on the trail.

Parents and siblings are welcom e\, although only scouts qualify for the hiking club patch\, which is award ed to first-time hikers on completion of their hike.

Parents\, please review the expectations for scouts at the Pack 564 Hiking Program Page. They should bring a small pack with water\, a snack\, insect and sun protection\, rain gear of some kind (disposable ponchos are light and cheap)\, a simple first aid ki t\, a flashlight and a whistle.

They won't use much\, if any\, of thi s gear other than the water. However\, the more they get used to collecting the proper gear for going outside\, the more of a habit it will be as they grow.

Please print out and bring a completed BSA Activity Consent form for every member of your party under the age of 21.

Please meet in the parking lot for the Songbird Trail\, which is located on the south end of the park along Robert E. Lee Blvd\, at 2 p.m . sharp!

This year we'll be attending the S pooky-ree at Bert Adams Scout Camp starting Friday\, October 21 through Sun day\, October 23. Spooky-ree is a fall themed weekend filled with a fall fe stival\, creepy-crawly nature show\, pumpkin carving and decorating\, arche ry\, BBs\, s'mores\, and a campfire. The highlight of the weekend is the Tr ick-or-Treating Trail for all Scouts and an extra spooky haunted trail for the older Scouts and adults.

IMPORTANT! Fall Family Camping for the weekend of October 21st is at capacity and our waiting list is closed. Plea se consider attending the second weekend on October 28th and REG ISTER HERE.

 

 

Activities Include:

  • Fall Festival- T he Fall Festival is new and improved with more games and activities. This y ear it's so big we had to move it to the largest field in camp! We are even showcasing 2 inflatable activities: a giant 16 foot slide and a 54 foot lo ng Swamper Stomper Obstacle Course!
  • BB Shooting- Ta ke aim at our shooting range.
  • Bows & Arrows- Can yo u hit the bull's eye?
  • Slingshots- Grab a "wrist roc ket" and see if you can hit the target!
  • Pumpkins- E very Scout and sibling gets a pumpkin! 2nd graders and youngers decorate th eir pumpkins and 3rd graders and older can carve with adult supervision.
  • Letters to the Troops- Write a letter to a US service man or woman who is deployed so that they can receive it on Thanksgiving.< /em>
  • Creepy Crawly Nature Show- Learn about the things t hat go bump in the night (aka. spiders\, snakes).
  • Guided Na ture Hike- Camp staff will guide you on a trail to see wildlife\, p lant life\, and explore our ecosystem.
  • Field Sports- Learn the rules and play a sport!
  • Fall Festival- Play carnival games\, explore the inflatables\, and much more!
  • Scavenger Hunt- Explore our camp and see how many items you can find.
  • Council Fire- Make s'mores and learn about C ub Scout summer camps!
  • Campfire- Experience a real Scout campfire program in the huge amphitheatre.
  • Trick-or-T reat Trail- Put on your costume and Trick-or-Treat on our slightly spooky trail.

For our November hike\, we return to Arabia Mountain to hike the Mountain Top Trail. This 1.3-mile trail will take hikers across the mountain peak. With about 150 feet of elevation gai n\, the trail is rated moderate.

Scouts should wear their Class B shi rts and rank caps if they have them\, and must bring our modified six essen tials for going outdoors: sun/rain/insect protection\, water\, trail snack\ , a simple first aid kit\, a light source and a whistle.

Aside from t he water\, the scouts probably won't need these items. This is mainly an ef fort to encourage the scouts to think about being prepared to be on the tra il when you're not with a large group or in a populated setting.

Clos ed-toed shoes are required for all hikers. Anyone in sandals or similar sho es won't be allowed to hike.

Please bring a completed consent form for each membe r of your party under the age of 21.

The hike begins promptly at 1:30 p.m. Please gather at the nature center.

About the Tri p

We will visit the Tennessee Aquarium for a day trip on Saturday\, February 25\, 2017. Registration includes a ticket to the aquarium and a tw o-hour excursion on the River Gorge Explorer. The River Gorge Explorer requ ires advance reservations and each trip can accommodate 70 individuals. We have 210 total spaces available to us and final counts must be submitted to the Tennessee Aquarium by mid January. Registration ends January 13th and no late reservations will be accepted.

Adults (13yrs and older): $28.50
Toddler s (under 3yrs): $18

IMAX tickets are NOT included but may be purchase d at the aquarium for half price with a scout in uniform.
