Harvest for the Hungry food drive begins Saturday

Scouts from Pack 564 help collect groceries during the Harvest for the Hungry food drive.
Scouts from Pack 564 help collect groceries during the Harvest for the Hungry food drive.

Please reserve time the next two Saturdays to participate in the Harvest for the Hungry food drive, Pack 564’s annual service project in conjunction with Troop 549, Pack 549, Mountain Park United Methodist Church and the Lilburn Cooperative Ministry to help feed our neighbors in need.

Den leaders have been asked to choose neighborhoods in which to distribute empty grocery bags on Saturday, Nov. 7, along with a note asking for donations of non-perishable groceries to go to the Lilburn Co-op.

Dens will return to those same neighborhoods on Saturday, Nov. 14 after 10 a.m. to pick up filled bags and deliver them to the Lilburn Co-Op, 5329 Five Forks Trickum Rd SW, Lilburn, GA 30047.

New this year, we will also be staffing booths at the Kroger at Five Forks and Rockbridge accepting drop-offs there. If you are unable to help your den distribute bags because of scheduling conflicts, this is a great way to be of service. We’ll be accepting donations from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 8 and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14. You can sign up for a shift now at Signup Genius.

This is an important project that helps feed our neighbors in need. According to Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic-hunger relief agency, more than 106,000 Gwinnett County residents go without consistent access to food at least part of the year.

Additionally, it may help fulfill advancement requirements for some ranks.

Lad and Dad Cake Bake: New rules to know about

cakeShipThe November pack meeting is less than a week away, which means it’s time to start thinking about your entry in the annual Lad and Dad Cake Bake!

New rules are in effect this year requiring that cakes be made of predominantly edible materials. They’ll also be sampled, although taste will not be taken into account as part of the judging.

Because they’ll be sampled at the pack meeting, cakes should also include a list of any potentially allergic ingredients. Parents, please assume all cakes contain allergens unless they’re specifically labeled allergen free.

As always, Tigers can enter cakes illustrated any way they and their adult partners please. Other scouts must enter cakes decorated to one of four themes: Scouting, holidays, sports or transportation.

For full rules and inspiration, please visit the Lad and Dad page of the website!

Don’t know what to bring on the campout? We’ve got you covered

cal-0814-cl2-camping-13Fall family camping coordinator Michael Rennick has put together a list of gear that may come in handy for those of you attending Fall Family Camping Oct. 23-25 at Stone Mountain Park.

This list may be particularly useful for anyone new to camping, but it’s also a good refresher for the more veteran campers among us.

Remember, if you’re lacking gear, ask around to other families in your den or the pack before heading out to buy expensive outdoor equipment that you may only rarely use.
