New hiking program starts in June

Courtesy sypsyn/FlickrGet ready to explore the great outdoors with Pack 564! As announced at the last pack meeting, we’re starting a year-round hiking program to provide scouts and their families with more opportunities to get into the outdoors.

We’ll have one hike each month of the year, most of them 2-3 miles in length. Events should typically last no more than a couple of hours.

After successful completion of their first hike, scouts will earn a Pack 564 hiking club patch (design coming soon!). After 50 miles, they will earn a customized hiking stick emblazoned with their name on it!

We will need several adults willing to serve as hike leaders throughout the year to help keep the group together and provide some outdoor skills instructions.

For full details, go to the new hiking program page.

To get signed up for the Pack 564 Hikers mailing list and express your interest in volunteering as a hike leader, please fill out the following form:

  • Please enter a cell phone number where we can send text messages with urgent updates (such as last-minute cancellations)

Volunteers still needed for Scout Show

header-pack564-w-bkgrdPack 564 runs a booth at the Scout Show at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds each year where kids can make their own wood-burned neckerchief slides and necklaces. The show is coming up on Saturday, but two 1-hour-long shift remain open — from 1-2 and from 2-3.

If your den hasn’t yet signed up, or you can volunteer to help fill these slots, please contact Andrew Lee as soon as possible.

Each shift requires at least three adults to help the kids use the wood burning tools, glue guns and drill. Scouts can help participants choose the wood chip for their slide, handing out gloves and other tasks.

Before or after your shift, you can check out activities and displays from scouting units all over the Northeast Georgia Council. Scouts and Scouters in uniform are admitted at no charge, camp cards provide free entry for up to four people.

Wednesday is last day for Spring Trip registrations, refunds

us-space-rocket-ctr-logoUPDATE: You have until Wednesday at noon to enter a new registration or request a refund.

We need to give a hard count to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center next week, so the cutoff for new registrations or refund requests will be 11:59 p.m. Tuesday night  Wednesday at noon. Please get all of your requests in by then.

Also, the Space Center says we have to order a single entree for the group. Plan now is to decide on what that will be by show of hands at the pack meeting Tuesday night.

If for some reason you can’t eat whatever entree ends up being chosen, you should be able to order from Rocket Center’s “Mars Grill,” which offers a salad bar, burgers, bbq and other items.

We’ll resend the email with trip details to all registrants on Wednesday or Thursday.
